ROSIE WILBY APRIL 17th
Rosie Wilby
Lancashire-born Rosie Wilby has resided in London since the early 90s.

Stirred by life in the big city and the sounds of the era (Britpop, trip hop) plus old favourites (Bowie, Prefab Sprout, Tom Waits, Al Green), she sang with a series of bands and with the infamous Queer Choir before getting her own group and songs together. It was an unruly and ever-evolving troupe, including cellists, sax players and a trio of backing vocalists.

In July 2000, when many of the band had gone their own way, she released debut album Precious Hours in the UK and Australia. The launch show at London’s Ronnie Scott’s club prompted The Guardian to praise her ‘glorious voice’. Meanwhile lead track, This Time, was selected for a Red magazine covermount CD featuring exciting new female artists and was aired on radio stations across the UK.

2001/2002 saw her touring the country, both solo and with a sized-down version of the old band. She’s supported a long list of impressive artists including Roddy Frame, Bob Geldof, Jamie Cullum, Midge Ure, The Czars, Joseph Arthur, Glenn Tilbrook, Cosmic Rough Riders, Martin Stephenson, Tom Pacheco, Steve Wynn, Hazel O’Connor and The Waifs. At this time, she also co-founded Arts Council funded project Girls Cross Country with fellow singer songwriter Virginia MacNaughton.

Be There was released as a single in 2001 and topped many online charts. More recently, ‘Saved’ has been included on a Spydaradio compilation alongside tracks by such luminaries as Chuck Prophet, Robyn Hitchcock, Tom Ovans and Redlands Palomino Company and ‘Reward’ features on a CD released by groovy London performance collective The Creative Swing.

Since 2005, Rosie has been making fans and friends on the festival circuit, not least at Glastonbury where she performed a solo acoustic set on the Left Field stage to an enraptured crowd.
Rosie also performed at Burnham’s own Folkfest in September 2007, hence the reason we are asking her back!

EMBER 17th July
Over the past six years the unique acoustic magic of Ember has delighted audiences all over the world – from California to Mexico, Ireland to Spain, Now based in Wales, where they have recorded all three of their albums, Ember has recently caused a stir at Broadstairs, Priddy, Glastonbury, Llangollen Fringe, Big Green Gathering, Warwick, Otley, Fishguard Folk Festival and Sesiwn Fawr, amongst other festivals, as well as folk clubs all over the UK.

The simple yet moving music centres around the miraculous blending of two very different voices: that of Welsh songstress Emily Williams, who also sails through the mix with her violin and sets up chunky rhythms with her nylon-strung guitar, and that of Rebecca Sullivan of Utah who fingerpicks a sparkling steel-string, and breaks out the harmonica for a song or two. Whenever possible the duo calls on Welsh cellist Emma Bryden, who brings depth to the music with her beautiful, moody strings.

You could call it contemporary folk – with an edge – and the group has been compared to Indigo Girls, The Be Good Tanyas, Simon and Garfunkel, Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked, Rickie Lee Jones and Dead Can Dance.

Engaging and humorous performers, Emily and Rebecca build a natural repartee with the audience - in true troubadour style. Hecklers are always welcome!
